Friday/Saturday 22/23 July – Dundas Harbour to Prince Regent Inlet
We departed Dundas Harbour and headed SW towards Prince Regent Inlet. This involved breaking thru an ice sheet several feet thick for 10+ miles before we reached open water. It is amazing how one minute you are in almost solid ice and then you find and enter a small inlet or harbour that is mostly ice free. At 10:00 PM last night we had our first polar beat sighting. I was on the bridge at the time and Captain Martin announced it over the PA and most of the passengers (seemed like all 98 of them) came up to see the action. We also spotted another bear in the ice floe around 1:00 AM. By morning we ended up in Jackson Inlet.
First Polar Bear sighting of the trip! This on an ice sheet, miles from shore. I took this with a 500mm lens, and its not a great picture but, it definitely looks like a polar bear….
Iceberg at the entrance to Dundas Harbour.
The ship passed quite close to this iceberg while we were maneuvering thru ice.
Some of the icebergs we pass are massive. There are probably 5 miles away. Taken with a 500mm lens.
